This article examines the political dimensions of the Regresso era governments’ investment in monarchical civic
ritual from 1837 to the coronation of emperor d. Pedro II in July 1841. Focusing on the cities of Rio de Janeiro and
Salvador, it argues that these celebrations should be understood as an extension of partisan politics, which profoundly
shaped the celebrations and the newspaper coverage of them.
