Sustainable Development Goals?

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that should indicate paths for more development in the world and for improving the quality of life for all. The goal was that these goals would be achieved by 2030, hence the SDGs are often called the 2030 Agenda.

The 17 SDGs are divided into five major areas:

  1. about people, the aim is to eradicate poverty and hunger.

  2. about prosperity, it is expected that it will be possible to guarantee a prosperous life in tune with nature.

  3. about peace, the aim is to promote peaceful, just and inclusive societies.

  4. in terms of partnerships, the objective is to establish solid global partnerships for the implementation of the agenda.

  5. about the sustainability of the planet, the aim is to protect natural resources and the climate so that the future of the next generations is guaranteed.

There is dissent in the academic community and in environmental organizations regarding the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. There are criticisms related to the lack of proposals for real changes in the system of production and consumption of goods and services. After all, isn't the system truly responsible for the generation of misery and social injustice? Is it not the system that produces social inequalities and hunger? Is it not the system that requires natural resources to be used irrationally? Is it not the international division of labour that produces violence and war?

There are other groups that demand more space for discussion on cultural, sexual and religious diversity. Furthermore, they have sought greater clarity on ways to deal with forest peoples who depend on the forest for their survival, and on women's sexual and reproductive rights, among other goals.

How to guarantee, in fact, initiatives that have sustainable development as their object? It is from this perspective that Revista Prometeica will publish, in August 2023, a dossier on the Sustainable Development Goals. We would be happy if we could count on an article from you for this special publication.

It is the transdisciplinary, questioning, non-dogmatic, dialogic character and proposing new perspectives for the construction of knowledge that motivated the indexing of Prometeica by the Web of Science and Scopus. In this sense, the contribution of critical researchers will make it possible to give voice to excluded groups and highlight initiatives that can go beyond the illusory and marketing discourse of sustainable development. It is our wish that the material to be published in the Dossier raises controversies, but that it also offers material that substantiates propositions and launches theoretical-methodological bases to think about a world that walks towards relationships based on Social Justice.

We will receive contributions until July 15, 2023, through our platform, available at: https://periodicos.unifesp.br/index.php/prometeica/index. Recommendations for authors are available at https://periodicos.unifesp.br/index.php/prometeica/about/submissions.

The Dossier will publish a maximum of two articles per author (individual authorship or shared authorship).
