Abstract

A new rurality has been championed in the sense of diversifying economic activities in rural areas. Economic development is not restricted only as agricultural activities, but a range of activities, including ecotourism. So ecotourism can be applied in this new rurality as a work opportunity in agrarian reform settlement projects. Ecotourism, besides economic benefits, contributes to the conservation of natural resources. In this context, the present work has the aim of mapping the settlement projects of the State of Tocantins with potential for the development of ecotourism activities. In this sense, geoprocessing tools for spatial intersection of the tourist potential of the Ecological-Economic Zoning and the Conservation Units with spatial information of settlement projects were integrated. In the state of Tocantins, of 347 settlement projects analyzed, 141 (40%) are in an area with ecotourism potential, of which 106 are potentially useful for ecotourism activities and 35 for beach tourism, representing 10,600 families that may be benefited with income generation and environmental awareness through ecotourism projects.
