Abstract

Sustainability indicators for sustainable tourism: a study in the municipality of Bananeiras (PB, Brazil)

ABSTRACT

The tourism activity has been the target of several researchers because it is considered an activity that relates directly to the environment bringing negative impacts, but can also promote sustainable development. Thus, adequate planning is needed to combine economic growth, social development and preservation of natural resources. In order to do so, sustainability indicators are an important tool capable of providing information that helps in the planning process by bringing researchers closer to the reality of a given locality. Therefore, this article aims to analyze tourism sustainability of Bananeiras-PB municipality applying the SISDTur methodology through exploratory and descriptive research. The results point out that Bananeiras tourism activity needs initiatives aimed at attending to all aspects of sustainability as a way to promote tourism in a sustainable manner and, consequently, the municipality. In this way, it is suggested implementation of a Municipal Tourism and Sustainable Development Plan in order to promote actions directed to the service of all spheres of sustainability.
