Application of GIS in the development of a Roadmap for the exploration of ecological tourism in the Vilankulo city- Mozambique

Abstract

The town of Vilankulo in Mozambique is one of the most important tourist destinations, with potential for tourism development, especially nature tourism. In the face of environmental demands and discussions, ecotourism has become an alternative for the tourism market focused on protected areas, as it is believed that this segment is capable of reconciling the development of tourism, simultaneously contributing to improving the conservation of the natural environment and also guaranteeing the appreciation of local communities, promoting their well-being. This is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted using the Geographic Information System (GIS) to draw up a route for exploring ecological tourism in the town of Vilankulo. The result was the creation of a geographic database, thematic maps and characterization of the historical, cultural and natural attractions that are important for ecotourism, which can be made available as a form of dissemination, both to the town's residents and to tourists, researchers or interested parties. Given the need to develop tourism in a sustainable way in Mozambique, Law No. 4/2004 of June 17 (Tourism Law) is in force.
