Animal ethics and tourism: perception and connivance of tourists in Amazonian experiences

Abstract

In tourism, animals have fulfilled diverse roles, several of which have been maintained for centuries without an underlying critique. Moralistic conceptions such as animal welfare and animal rights have confronted practices of animal exploitation and domination. Based on this, the article aimed to evaluate the perception of visitors in relation to direct contact with the wildlife of Manaus, under the light of animal ethics. To this end, the comments of individuals who have carried out tourist experiences in Manaus and surroundings and that were posted on TripAdvisor® were used as a basis. The data were examined through content analysis (BARDIN, 2004). It was found that most users had had direct contact with animals and were favorable to the practice. A minority of the comments presented criticism of the experience; however, they were partial criticisms. The findings demonstrate an alignment with instrumentalist anthropocentrism.
