A Um protocolo para avaliar o potencial de áreas protegidas para o turismo de observação de aves: um estudo de caso na Amazônia Brasileira

Abstract

A observação de aves é um crescente segmento do ecoturismo e as áreas protegidas da América do Sul têm um enorme potencial para contribuir para o desenvolvimento dessa atividade. Apresentamos um protocolo simples para avaliar o potencial da área protegida para atrair e receber observadores de aves. O protocolo baseia-se na aplicação de pontuações brutas usando os seguintes critérios: i) potencial da avifauna local para atrair observadores de aves, ii) instalações logísticas da área protegida e iii) serviços de acomodação, comunicação, apoio à saúde e transporte disponíveis no (s) município (s) localizados perto da área protegida. O protocolo foi aplicado em uma área protegida localizada no estado do Acre, sudoeste da Amazônia brasileira. Trinta espécies de aves (11% da avifauna) alcançaram o nível mais alto de atratividade para observadores de aves. A área protegida e seus municípios vizinhos mostram capacidade mediana para acolher observadores de aves. A aplicação do protocolo em outras áreas protegidas será necessária para melhorar sua aplicabilidade. O método, no entanto, pode ser útil para uma análise preliminar do potencial de observação de aves em áreas protegidas.

    Graduated in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (1991), master's degree in Biology (Ecology) from the National Institute for Research in the Amazon (1995) and doctorate in Zoology from the Federal University of Pará / Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (2004). Bird specialist (ornithologist) having published more than 30 works in respected national and international magazines. He worked for twenty years as the scientific coordinator of the Scientific Research Program and the Knowledge and Conservation Program of the Vitória Amazônica Foundation (FVA), a respected conservation organization in the Amazon. He acted as technical coordinator in the creation and elaboration of management plans for conservation units managed by public agencies such as the Amazonas State Secretariat for Sustainable Development (SDS), the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBIO). He coordinated and participated in research and development projects supported by important funding agencies such as the Amazonas Research Support Foundation (FAPEAM), São Paulo Research Support Foundation (FAPESP), Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation (FBGM) and WWF - Brazil. Acts in the review of scientific articles for national and international scientific journals, in addition to having served as a book editor. Collaborates with postgraduate programs of the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA), Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) and Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG) as an evaluator on qualification and defense boards for master's and doctoral projects, in addition to to guide and co-orient graduate students. Provided specialized consultancies for studies of environmental impacts (EIA / RIMA) in several regions of the Amazon. Advised the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) on issues related to monitoring biodiversity and assessing the state of conservation of national fauna. He received a scholarship from the Support Program for the Attachment of Doctors in Amazonas (FIXAM / AM) of the Amazonas Research Support Foundation (FAPEAM) developing his postdoctoral project with the National Institute for Research in the Amazon (INPA). He serves as associate editor of the scientific journal Acta Amazônica. He is Adjunct University Professor, Level 2 at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM).

    Graduado em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Federal do Acre (1994), Mestre em Ciências Biológicas (Ecologia) pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia / Universidade Federal do Amazonas (1997) e Doutor em Zoologia (Ornitologia) pelo Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi / Universidade Federal do Pará (2009). Professor Associado II da Universidade Federal do Acre. Tenho experiência na área de Zoologia com ênfase em Ornitologia e Paleontologia de vertebrados atuando, principalmente, nos seguintes temas: Aves da Amazônia, Aves do Acre e fósseis do Terciário e Quaternário da Amazônia ocidental.
