Outdoor recreation and tourism in Brazilian Protected Areas: a systematic review

Abstract

Between 2000 and 2023, visitation to Brazilian protected areas (PAs) grew almost 12-fold. Although on a much smaller scale, research on recreation and tourism in Brazilian PAs also increased. However, little is known about this academic literature. To fill this gap, this paper presents a systematic literature review on the subject by analyzing 60 peer-reviewed papers published between 2000 and 2023, indexed in Scopus and SciELO Brazil. The analysis covered bibliometric, thematic, and geographic aspects. The results indicate a predominance of studies on parks in the southeast region, with a focus on management and policy themes. Half of the articles were published in English, and most were published in Brazilian journals, with more than three authors, who were predominantly men. The diversity of themes is evident in the wide range of keywords used. These themes focuses primarily on five key areas: management and policies, economics, recreation ecology, psychosocial factors, and visitor profiles. Despite the increase in research, we identified some thematic gaps. Improved coordination of research efforts can enhance the impact of academic contributions to outdoor recreation in Protected Areas.
