Abstract

The royal decrees of 1808 that authorized a “Just War” against Indians in São Paulo and Minas Gerais were revoked in 1831. This article proposes to analyze how this revocation took place, showing the relationship between the Parliamentary debates during 1831 and the deliberations originating from São Paulo province. In this case, conflicts between the inhabitants of São Paulo and the Indians near the frontier towns of Itapetininga and Itapeva during the early nineteenth century had repercussions in the Parliament, ultimately resulting in the elaboration of an imperial decree on this issue.
