The relationship between the Amazon and voyagers is a subject that has
long been urging researchers in different disciplines and various parts of
the world. And this subject sometimes seems endless. This paper seeks to
contribute to this discussion with a small fragment: narrating the journey
of Franz Keller-Leuzinger. Although his work has already been used in
works dealing with the history of the railroad and the photography, there
are few studies dedicated exclusively to this character, which remains
almost unknown. The main goal of this article is to give him prominence
and thus to understand how the Amazon was perceived at the end of
the Empire, how its integration to the national territory was conceived and
its role in the Brazilian nationalism sentiment based upon the idea of a
great territory.
