Abstract

A Philosophy of Fear is a lucid and profound essay on how the passion of fear greatly conditions the unfolding of our being. Based on outstanding representatives of the Western philosophical and literary tradition (in its pages we will find authors such as Epicurus, Spinoza, Montaigne, Nietzsche, Saint Bernard and Borges, among many others), Castany Prado not only urges us to look our fears in the face; he also provides us with tools to fight our own ghosts.

The book has the merit of being divided into chapters in which the reality of fear is approached from different perspectives: anthropological, ethical-political, historical, literary. Each chapter is, in turn, subdivided into sections, which are also cut into paragraphs of no more than two pages, which makes it extremely pleasant to read, since the text can be approached without the need to abandon it in the middle of a section or chapter. Even so, each chapter expresses a thematic unity in which it speaks, for example, of the relationship of fear with the other passions, with the virtues, contemplation and freedom.

    Profesor en Filosofía por UNMdP y Doctor en Filosofía por la UNLa (Argentina). Profesor auxiliar de ética metafísica y filosofía medieval por casi diez años en la UNMdP. Actualmente se desempeña como docente de ética y encargado del Foco de Posgrado en el Departamento de Humanidades de la Universidad Católica San Pablo (Arequipa/ Perú). Miembro Fundador de la Comunidad Iberoamericana de estudios Macintyreanos. Coeditor, junto al doctor Javier de la Torre, del libro Alastair Macintyre: Relecturas iberoamericanas. Recepción y proyecciones (Dykinson 2020) y autor del libro Alasdair MacIntyre y la actuación racional en la tradición neoaristotélica (Dykinson 2021). Cooeditó, junto a Javier de la Torre y Lucio Nontol el libro Cuarenta años de After Virtue. Relecturas Iberoamericanas (Dykinson 2022)
