Abstract

This article studies from a philosophical perspective the role played in our world by the image understood in a broad sense. We are in the world of the videosphere. We prefer images to things. The real has dissolved into simulacre. Reality is now the image of reality, spectacle. Nothing exists outside the screens, so that the world has become devoid of mystery. The human being himself has become homo aestheticus. In this videocracy, the world as image is the consequence of a will to power that reduces the real to an object. The threat of the disappearance of the real and of the human being has not yet been consummated.
