Abstract

Objective: to verify whether the information given by ABRELA allow access to the available resources (informative, human, support and material resources); if the expectations were fulfilled, and also whether there are differences between São Paulo State and other Brazilian states related to the access to the above mentioned resources. Method: 30 patients were registered in ABRELA (15 from SP and 15 from other states), with diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), confirmed at least one year earlier. Patients with the form of progressive

bulbar paralysis not were appraised. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied, with personal identification, comments on the disease and pertinent issues referring to their access to resources. Results: There were 83.3% married, 60% male and the mean age was 56.2 ± 2.18 years. 63% had two caregivers, and the spouse was the main caregiver (31.6%). The support of other institutions and of the community was present in 80% of the cases; however 76.7% needed other therapeutic attendances (hydrotherapy, regional headquarter of ABRELA and homecare service). Conclusions: despite the availability of the resources, in larger amount their accesses is restricted to patients living in the state of SP, place where is located the headquarters of the association. This brings out the need of larger investments for the implementation of regional ABRELAs, as well as for more training of multidisciplinary professionals.
