The Effects of Vargas’ Nationalization Campaign on the Syrian-Lebanese Community Monolingualism and Linguistic-Identity Strategies in the Magazine ‘O Oriente’

Abstract
To study Syrian-Lebanese immigration to the city of São Paulo, it is essential to understand the markers used by its intellectuals in constructing their identity as a social group. Like other diasporic groups, this identity process encompassed issues such as territory, language, history, ancestry, property, and character. Analyzed through the December 1942 issue of ‘O Oriente’, a magazine by Mussa Kuraiem, these markers were selected to discuss how the immigrant community built its identity in parallel with its imagined perception of Getúlio Vargas. Taking into account Brazil’s entry into World War II and Vargas’s monolingual policies toward immigrants, we present a textual and content analysis of how the December issue of ‘O Oriente’ addressed these issues. Considering that from 1941 to 1947, Arabic-language articles gradually lost prominence in the magazine, we hypothesize that the magazine's survival amid Vargas's policies was due to its linguistic strategies in constructing and/or separating Brazilian identity. Based on this perspective, the article questions the strength of such policies after the end of the Estado Novo and reiterates the strategic and identity-driven struggle over language reflected in the pages of ‘O Oriente’.
