Food insecurity persists despite technological advancements in Latin America, mainly concentrating in urban areas and their surroundings. The FAO indicates that food security relies on territorial planning, especially in urban zones, to reorganize food production and supply. High production costs, competition among large producers, and technological advancements, coupled with resource concentration in the food sector, hinder equitable access to food. State intervention in urban planning is essential, yet current actions are insufficient to address the growing food insecurity. A balanced urban development approach is proposed, where the State leads planning and public investment to promote family food production in urban and peri-urban areas as an alternative to industrial agriculture. Considering both the global context and local particularities, such as the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, is crucial. In this context, social movements and popular organizations play a significant role in promoting urban family agriculture as an integral strategy to tackle food insecurity in 21st century Argentina.
