Vol. 7 No. 2 (2025): Art History and Historiography: Current Issues and Future Horizons

The adoption of a global perspective has introduced a multitude of challenges for the reception of emerging historical–artistic epistemologies, while simultaneously rendering the navigation of these expanded horizons considerably more complex. The discussion underscores both the opportunities and the obstacles inherent in the discourse of global art, thereby creating conditions for a more rigorous examination of debates between local art ecosystems and the expanding global art market. Such dynamics stand to enrich the ongoing dialogue concerning the intricate relationship between the very notion of globality and the involvement of Art History and Art Historiography as heuristic categories shaped by their own historical commitments.

This dossier seeks to assemble contributions that engage with the diverse research problems within Art History and Art Historiography, with particular emphasis on the Global South and on new epistemologies and methodological approaches. In a context marked by debates over the conditions that have enabled the emergence and consolidation of these fields within a dominant disciplinary paradigm, the need to explore alternative perspectives and modes of experiencing and narrating histories—especially those marginalized or consigned to oblivion owing to their transformative potential—becomes increasingly imperative. Accordingly, we posit that the disciplinary stabilization of research in Art History and Art Historiography coexists with the rise of new conceptions of historicity, which extend beyond conventional frameworks and thus invigorate the renewal of our scholarly practices.
