FEMININE EMANCIPATION IN RIO’S PRESS
AN ANALYSIS ON O SEXO FEMININO AND ECHO DAS DAMAS (1875-1889)

In the first half of the 19th century, a number of female figures emerged in Brazil, influenced by European ideas about women’s position in society, manifested by certain equality between genders. Within this period, they threw themselves into the task of working in the press by directing newspapers of a militant nature, in favor of better social and political conditions for women. This article analyzes the process of feminine emancipation in the newspapers O Sexo Feminino and Echo das Damas, published between 1875 and 1889, in Rio de Janeiro. These printed media were founded by women and their main objective was discussing the importance of women’s education and vocational qualification in Brazil. The proposal consists in investigating the role of these newspapers, considering them not only as sources, but also as study objects. It is intended to put into perspective the multiplicity of women’s emancipatory projects in the end of the 19th century, observing the press as a privileged means of action.
