A TEOLOGIA POLÍTICA ANGLO-SAXÔNICA NO POEMA JUDITE

Preservado em caráter incompleto junto com Beowulf, o poema Judite, cujo manuscrito data da virada para o século XI, destaca-se como uma possível fonte para diversas leituras do período Anglo-Saxônico. Uma leitura incomum dele é enquanto um veículo de mensagens políticas. Com base no livro de Judite da Bíblia Vulgata Latina, o poema é povoado por elementos culturais de base germânica, onde Judite assume um papel de guerreira, em um pano de fundo do antigo testamento. A personagem bíblica é apropriada pelos anglo-saxões a partir de uma leitura alegórica, cujo efeito é atestado pela multiplicidade de representações da personagem Judite. Além do poema, é analisada a homilia de Ælfric de Eynsham (c.950-c.1010), onde o caráter celibatário é destacado. Com a comparação entre os dois textos, este artigo busca o que há de político no poema: o ideário que data do período do Rei Alfred (r.871-899) e as suas reformas que culminaram em uma teologia política cristã centralizada na figura real. A questão do seu público-alvo, por fim, possibilita formular a hipótese do poema Judite como uma peça de retórica política para a aristocracia laica e eclesiástica em um período de intensificação de ameaças externas e instabilidade política similares àquelas enfrentadas no século IX.
