Vicente Ferreira Pires’ and John M’ Leod’s travel books on Dahomey
Atlantic representations between diplomacy, civilization and trade (1796-1803)

This article aims to analyze the books of two travelers who were in the kingdom of Dahomey during the turn of the 18th century to the 19th century: the Portuguese-Bahian priest Vicente Ferreira Pires and the English military officer John M’Leod. From the comparative analysis of their reports, considered in the context of their production and their publication, we seek to demonstrate the potential of such reports for the writing of the historiography of diplomatic relations between Dahomey and the European nations with whom they negotiated within the Atlantic slave trade. We seek to demonstrate how the outsiders authors, imbued with Eurocentric perspectives, explained the contradictions of the European view of the African continent and, at the same time, revealed, albeit in an unconscious way, aspects of the diplomatic structure skillfully manipulated by the Dahomean elites.
