Abstract

Thinking about the chronological cut that goes from the moment of labor upheavals in the 1910s to the early years of the 1940s, there is a strong tendency to understand this as the moment of improvised attempts, by the upper classes and the government, to use preexisting charity and philanthropy as a way of access and increase assistance establishments. Taking as a documentary basis the summary assessment of the data extracted from the “Private Charity” section of the Statistical Yearbooks of the State of São Paulo in the period comprising the data from 1917 to 1941, our main objective is to verify, through the official data released at the time, the behavior of this philanthropic health care network, considering only the city of São Paulo (Capital).
