O Domboc, código de leis do rei Alfredo, o Grande, escrito na década de 890, é geralmente tido como uma obra legislativa cujos objetivos centrais foram os de afirmar o poder régio e auxiliar na criação de uma identidade inglesa. Enquanto diversos trabalhos se direcionaram para a análise de aspectos referentes a estes objetivos, poucos se voltaram para assuntos mais periféricos, como o tratamento dispensado pelo Domboc a outras esferas da sociedade, como, por exemplo, a Igreja. Tendo isso em vista, o presente artigo objetiva, em permanente diálogo com outros autores que trataram de semelhantes temas, verificar de que forma as leis de Alfredo, o Grande, tratam questões relativas à Igreja e à autoridade eclesiástica e leiga, no contexto de secularização da Igreja durante o século IX. Buscaremos, assim, entender as leis como reveladoras da percepção régia sobre tal processo e como atuantes na conformação do contexto em que se inscrevem.
