On Translation and Politics a Project for Nadia Tuéni’s “Archives Sentimentales D’une Guerre au Liban”

Abstract
Drawing on a conception of translation as a political tool, this article presents a translation project into Brazilian Portuguese of the book Archives sentimentales d'une guerre au Liban (1982), written in French by the award-winning Lebanese poet Nadia Tuéni (1935-1983), along with comments on the translation of some of the poems included in the work. The poet’s life and oeuvre are presented as part of the translation project, which is developed in three stages, in which the translator – in this case, a descendant of Palestinian-Lebanese exiles in Brazil – acts as a political subject within her historical present: a) the selection of the source text and author; b) the aesthetic-linguistic-discursive work; and c) the circulation of the translated book. By introducing the translated book and its author into the Brazilian national context, I seek to contribute to the travels of epistemological and literary knowledge in non-hegemonic directions, fostering the translation of experiences between peoples and communities that, despite their differences, share enough to be able to encounter what is common to them.
