Abstract

Why would freedom provoke so much fear, since it has never ceased to be a crucial aspiration of democratic regimes and is at the heart of their ideals? For what reasons would freedom arouse fear? In this text, we will dedicate ourselves to elucidating the causes and effects of this fear of freedom in contemporary societies – impotence, dependence, isolation and their resulting effects: communitarization.

Claudine Haroche, Universidade Paris VIII

PhD in Sociology (Paris VII, 1978) and research director at the CNRS, linked to the Center for Transdisciplinary Research in Sociology, Anthropology and History (CETSAH) recently renamed the Edgard Morin Center, the Interdisciplinary Institute of Contemporary Anthropology (IIAC) at the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) and an associate member of the Laboratory of Social Change (Paris VIII).
