Language skills of children using hearing devices: narrative review

Objective. To evaluate, through a literature review, the development of language skills in children who use Individual Sound Amplification Device or Cochlear Implant. Method. The search for scientific articles was carried out in the MedLine (Pubmed), LILACS, SciELO, Scopus, Web of Science and Bireme databases, without restriction of language, period and location. The research was conducted with the retrieval of articles that answered the guiding question and then were evaluated using the qualitative scoring protocol proposed by Pithon et al. (2015). Eligible articles were analyzed and quantified according to the proposed criteria, with blind judges in the retrieval stages. Initially, 64 articles were selected, later scaled to 7 articles for the final analysis. Results. Studies indicate that greater degrees of hearing loss are associated with poorer linguistic and speech levels, and auditory intervention is associated with an increase in the quality and accessibility of conceptual representations and improvement in oral and written language skills. Conclusion. A well-structured therapeutic program together with sound amplification devices adapted early and appropriately according to the needs of each child, allows for the expanded and efficient development of narrative, discursive, pragmatic and phonological linguistic skills.
