Abstract

Since the last international epileptic syndromes classification, in 1989, new EEG patterns and others epileptic syndromes have been published, leaving the current classification not up-to-date. The EEG is essential in the differential diagnosis of infantile spasms, mainly in West Syndrome because it helps to identify the benign type and has been important to clarify the physiopathological hypothesis. The Lennox-Gastaut syndrome may be distinguished of others similar syndromes only by the EEG. In the rolandic epilepsy the EEG identifies the benign form and, recently, was suggested a change in its concept. The presence of frontal focus in absence seizures and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (primary generalized epilepsies) has suggested new physiopathological hypothesis. The benign partial epilepsy of infancy with complex partial seizures or with convulsions has received this terminology because of dal EEG studies. The morphological aspects of iota! EEG and the interictal dipole in temporal lobe epilepsy is of great value to locate the epileptogenic zone.
