Objetives: To demonstrate an experience with the use of intravenous Alteplase in the daily clinical practice, verifying the efficiency and safety of the mentioned procedure. Methodology: All the cases where intravenous Alteplase was used inthe treatment of Ischaemic Stroke were studied retrospectively from August 1997 to July 2004. Results: Alteplase was used in 27 patients. The time between the onset of the symptoms and the drug administration was: in 17 patients between 90-180 minutes, in 6 patients between 180-360 minutes and in 2 patients less than 90 minutes. The mean NIHSS Score at admission was 18, having 11 patients presented a reduction af 5 or more points in the NIHSS score within the first 24 hours. One patient had non-symptomatic intracranial haemoerhage Conlusion: The high mortality rates observed can be explained by the severity of the patients in this series (mean NIH -18). When conpared ti the NINDS (mean NIH – 15) and ECASS II (mean NIH -11) series parodoxally we have observed no cases of symptomatic intracranial bleeding, despite the great number of protocol violations. This data ratifies the safety of IV Alteplase use in the treatment of Ischaemic Stroke.
