Physical therapeutics Resources (Criotherapy and Thermotherapy) in spasticity

The cryotherapy and the thermotherapy are technical therapeutics employed on treatment of the spasticity, in other words, a motor alteration in several pathologies of the central nervous system, having as clinical signs the hypertonia, exacerbated tendinous reflexes, clonus, and positive Babinski sign. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of the cryotherapy and of the thermotherapy in the spasticity treatment. It was accomplished a literature review based on books and national and international indexed articles in the database of Medline and Lilacs, from 1998 to 2006, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The words used to the research were spasticity, physical therapy, cryotherapy, and thermotherapy. The analyzed studies showed that the cryotherapy and the thermotherapy are resources used with the purpose to reduce the spasticity, facilitating the exercises treatment execution by the physical therapist, providing well-being and better quality of life to the patient. The association of the two techniques offers better results than the application of just one or another technique in an isolated way. However, it is necessary the accomplishment of more studies about this theme, because there are few literary references that relates the use of these resources in the spasticity treatment and divergences exist among the authors that should be illustrious.
