Resumo

O trabalho trata dos mecanismos envolvidos na dependência ao álcool e à nicotina. A dependência é caracterizada pelo uso compulsivo de uma determinada substância, que leva a uma inabilidade em limitar o consumo e ao surgimento de uma síndrome de abstinência durante a interrupção. O reforço ou recompensa ocorre quando neurônios liberam dopamina para o nucleus accumbens após o consumo da droga. A tolerância consiste na diminuição de sensibilidade ao efeito da droga de tal modo que, com o passar do tempo, doses maiores são necessárias para a obtenção do mesmo efeito. Várias drogas que podem atuar bloqueando os mecanismos de dependência são utilizadas ou estão sendo desenvolvidas para o tratamento da dependência a essas drogas.
