Background. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs, manifesting when patients are seated still, mostly in the night and get better with movement. Objective. To address the sensitivity, specificity, and agreement of The Johns Hopkins telephone diagnostic interview for the restless legs syndrome. Method. We included 41 patients. Seventeen were previously diagnosed with RLS by an experimented physician in a clinical set. Twenty four people did not have RLS symptoms. All participants were interviewed by a researcher blinded to the diagnoses. We calculated the sensitivity, specificity, agreement (Kappa statistics), considering the diagnostic in the clinical set as gold standard. Results. Among the 41 patients interviewed by the telephone, we decided that 19 had RLS and 22 did not. Comparing these results with the gold standard procedure we achieved specificity of 83% (20/24) and sensitivity of 88% (15/17). The agreement the phone interview and the clinical diagnostic was substantial (Kappa = 69%). Conclusion. The Johns Hopkins telephone diagnostic interview for the restless legs syndrome has a good sensitivity/specificity and substantial agreement to RLS diagnose.
