Systematic training in psychiatric emergencies for health professionals: a single arm trial

Abstract

Introduction. Training in psychiatric emergencies is still not prioritized in health courses or public policies, despite being frequent. Objective. There as few structure training programs for psychiatric emergencies. In this single arm trial was planned to validate a Psychiatric Emergency Support Basic Course for doctors, nurses, and respective students. Method. For this, 200 volunteers were invited in four courses in the events of Brazilian Psychiatric Association.  In each course there were 50 participants. They were divided into groups: 61 doctors, 48 nurses, 45 medical students, and 46 nurse students. The main outcome was the mean difference of a 30 questions tests after and before the course. Results. There was a mean 44.9±5.9 in the test performance, with big effect size: t=106.805, p<0.001, Cohen’s d=0.81 (95% CI 4.99-6.10). Conclusion. In conclusion, the Psychiatric Emergency Support Basic Course proved to be effective in expanding the knowledge of health professionals. Furthermore, it is an easy and inexpensive course, very useful for public health programs. New studies could expand this course, increasing time and even including practical activities.
