Abstract

Introduction. This study addresses the worrying prevalence of overweight and obesity in Brazil, highlighting that about 49% of the population over 20 years of age faces this problem. Bariatric surgery, often used to treat obesity, goes beyond simple weight reduction, aiming to optimize psychosocial functioning and improve the quality of life. Objectives. To evaluate the psychological disorders in participants submitted to bariatric surgery, considering the postoperative emotional and behavioural challenges. Method. Before-after clinical trial. The tests assessed the degree of anxiety, depression and stress, and the sample consisted of 20 participants. Results. It was observed that approximately one year after surgery, without adequate therapeutic follow-up, participants can resort to excessive food consumption to deal with their emotions, which can result in weight gain, nullifying the benefits of surgery. In addition, lifestyle transformations after surgery included the prolonged use of vitamin supplements, which can be a challenging experience for participants. Conclusion. The results show the complexity of obesity, influenced by several factors. The crucial importance of a multidisciplinary preoperative evaluation is highlighted, which considers not only physical aspects, but also emotional ones, such as compulsion and anxiety.
