Abstract

Introduction. Stroke is one of the most disabling diseases in the world. Aspects related to activity and social participation after stroke are as worrying as mortality. Objective. To correlate hospitalization factors with the activity and social participation of stroke survivors after discharge. Method. This is a longitudinal study of individuals in the subacute phase after stroke who were admitted to a state public neurology referral hospital in Salvador, Bahia. The primary data assessed during hospitalization were stroke severity, thoracic mobility, respiratory muscle strength, coughing ability, postural control and functional disability. Secondary data were extracted from medical records and the outcomes, activity and social participation, were investigated six months after discharge. Results. The sample consisted of 50 volunteers, with a mean age of 58±12 years, 27 (54%) female; the mean NIHSS scale was 5±4, the mean length of stay was 20±13 days, 42 (84%) with ischemic stroke and 11 (22%) thrombolyzed. Around 21 (45%) had left hemiparesis and 8 (16%) had heminegligence. There was no correlation between hospitalization factors and the outcomes investigated. Conclusion. There was no relationship between thoracic mobility, respiratory muscle strength, coughing ability, postural control and functional capacity with activity and social participation in stroke survivors after hospital discharge.
