Physiotherapeutic treatment for multiple sclerosis: an integrative review

Abstract

Introduction. Physiotherapeutic intervention aims to reduce the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, minimizing the limitations of patients, maximizing their functional capacity and ensuring the maintenance of quality of life. Objectives. To evaluate the role of physiotherapy in the treatment of MS, analyzing the main techniques applied and their effectiveness, in addition to verifying the main evaluation measures used in the studies. Method. This is an integrative literature review, through the SciELO, PEDro, LILACS, Latindex and Medline databases, in Portuguese and English, with the following descriptors: “Multiple Sclerosis” AND “Physical Therapy” AND “Treatment” in portuguese and in english. Results. Practical exercises, kinesiotherapy, kinesiotherapy, circuits, ramps, stairs, isometrics, favorable exercises, pelvic training exercises, such as pelvic training contractions and Pilates were some of the factors for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. Conclusion. Physiotherapy is essential for the maintenance of vital function, quality of life, preservation of muscle strength and improvement of cognitive functions.
