Abstract

Introduction. Stroke is currently the second biggest cause of mortality in Brazil and understanding death resulting from hospitalization can provide answers to the severity of the condition, as well as the quality of the Unified Health System (SUS) in the care of critically ill patients. Objective. Describe hospitalizations with deaths of people who had a stroke, in the SUS, Federal District, as well as related expenses. Method. This is a cross-sectional, non-experimental epidemiological study. Data collection was carried out through the InfoSaúde website, between the months of August and September 2023. “hospitalizations with deaths” and “hospitalizations” were accessed. Results. In the Federal District, 7,632 hospitalizations with ICD I64 were identified, considering all ages. The prevalence was higher in males aged 60 or over. The District Reference Units (URD) had the highest percentage of hospitalizations with deaths, due to the severity of the cases as they are referenced locations. The Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal (HBDF), the main reference, had a total expenditure of R$12,225,196.19 invested in procedures, an increase of R$409,021.78 in 2022 compared to 2018. Conclusion. The number of deaths during hospitalization did not vary too much during the period analyzed, however, expenses increased with stroke treatment, showing the commitment of government officials to improve the quality of treatment, an issue that can be avoidable in tbe most of cases and which generates so many avoidable unnecessary.
