Abstract

Introduction. Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare autoimmune disease that affects the peripheral nervous system. Objective. To provide a better understanding of the evolution of the disease and the physiotherapeutic approach to CIDP. Case Report. This case report was performed using physical and electronic medical records. A 36-year-old female patient was hospitalized at the University Hospital of Western Paraná for nine months in 2008 with Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS), requiring mechanical ventilation with difficult weaning and tracheostomy. After discharge, she had motor sequelae and difficulty walking, and had a new episode of Guillain Barré Syndrome in 2017. After that, she was hospitalized twenty four times and was diagnosed with CIDP. Due to the sequelae of the disease, she underwent physiotherapeutic treatment in all hospitalizations with different objectives. Discussion: Physiotherapy is essential in the treatment of CIDP and GBS, due to the deficit in peripheral and respiratory muscle strength, affecting functionality and consequently quality of life. In addition, physiotherapy aims to prevent immobility in hospitalized patients. Conclusion. Physiotherapy was important in the 17 years of treatment, aiming at ventilatory weaning and improvement of pulmonary and motor functionality.
