Abstract

Introduction. Post-stroke patients present with upper limb dysfunction (UL), and consequently functional losses that affect manual strength and dexterity. Interventions based on virtual reality contribute to the treatment and motivation of patients during the rehabilitation process and real activities emphasize tasks performed in a similar way to virtual reality in the real world. Objective. To verify the impact of virtual and real reality on manual dexterity and upper limb strength in post-stroke individuals. Method. Longitudinal study, consisting of 12 post-stroke individuals, of both sexes, aged over 18 years, randomized into two groups: Virtual Reality Group (GRV) undergoing intervention with MoveHero® and KID® Basketball and Activity Group Real (GAR) with cycle ergometer, basketball and balloon game. A pre- and post-intervention assessment of handgrip strength (HGS) and the box and blocks test (TCB) were carried out, so the intervention protocol was divided into 6 sessions, totaling 3 weeks. Results. There were significant differences in HGS (p=0.002) and TCB (p=0.01) in the upper limb (UL) with GRV hemiparesis. In the GAR TCB there was improvement in both upper limbs, with a value of p=0.001 in the UL with hemiparesis and p=0.04 in the UL without hemiparesis. Conclusion. Therefore, the virtual reality used in this research impacted manual dexterity and muscular strength of the upper limbs, while real activities only produced improvements in manual dexterity.
