Abstract

Introduction. Stroke is among the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world, and respiratory complications are responsible for a significant increase in hospital admission costs. Objective. To verify the correlation between respiratory muscle strength and functional disability in individuals with stroke in the subacute hospital phase. Method. Observational study with a cross-sectional design, composed of individuals of both sexes, aged between 18 and 85 years, diagnosed with stroke admitted to a referral hospital in neurology in Bahia. To assess functional disability, the Rankin Scale was used and to measure respiratory muscle strength, manovacuometry. Results. The sample consisted of 28 individuals, with a mean age of 57.39±15.1, mean length of stay of 21.6±18.0 days, predominantly diagnosed with ischemic stroke 22 (78.6%), female gender 19 (67.9%), black race 11 (39.3%), married 18 (64.3%) and the majority developed some activity 17 (60.7%). The reduction in MIP and MEP has a moderate correlation with functional disability. Conclusion. There is a moderate negative correlation between respiratory muscle strength and functional disability in ADLs in individuals with stroke in the subacute hospital phase.
