Abstract

This reflection aims to summarise the life of the Classical Studies Group at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Coimbra over the last eighty years, combining an objective summary with a testimony of experience. It includes elements such as the characteristics of the course offered by the Classics of Coimbra and its interaction with other courses at the Faculty, the main lines of the research carried out over the decades and the multiple para-scholastic activities that make up its day-to-day activities.

Author Biography

  • Maria de Fátima Silva, Coimbra University

    Maria de Fátima Silva is a retired Full Professor at the Institute of Classical Studies at the University of Coimbra. Her PhD field of research was Ancient Greek Comedy (Theatre criticism in Ancient Greek Comedy). She has since been undertaking research in the same area and has published several books and articles, as well as translations, with commentaries, of nine comedies by Aristophanes, and a volume with a translation of Menander’s plays and best-preserved fragments. Recently focused in Reception Studies, she has coordinated and collaborated in several volumes such as Portrayals of Antigone in Portugal, Portraits of Medea in Portugal, A special model of Classical Reception: Summaries and short narratives, The Classical Tradition in Portuguese and Brazilian Poetry.
