The traumatic episode of The Fogo de 51 in Barra Velha / BA
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article seeks to analyze the episode known as Fogo de 51, a violent action against the Pataxó indigenous population located on the coast of the extreme south of Bahia. The scene resulted from the struggle against the expropriation of Monte Pascoal, which was elevated to the status of a National Park during the Getúlio Vargas State Dictatorship (1937 - 1945). We used an analysis of the book Barra Velha: o último refúgio (1985), written in 1978 in order to use the concept of trauma proposed by the American historian and theorist Dominick LaCapra. It also uses Bahian newspapers, such as O Momento and A Tarde, as well as the Rio de Janeiro newspaper Imprensa Popular and the reports on the Fogo de 51.
