Abstract

The research and outreach experiences with high school students from public schools in Santos, São Paulo, which prioritized participatory methodologies among youth, guide the reflections presented here. Developed since 2014 and intensified through the implementation of a multicentric thematic research between 2018 and 2022, research activities linked to outreach programs with youth participation allowed for an analysis of the challenges in using such methodological procedures. The immersion in journal entries, meeting reports, and technical activity reports enabled the identification of some contemporary challenges faced by students, reiterating already known patterns of inequality - gender, race, class, and generation - and calling, both theoretically and methodologically, for the construction of responses relevant to this reality. The knowledge produced in the youth-to-youth dialogue reaffirms the importance of being present in the "school setting" by choosing methods and resources that take into account the youth experience and the constitutive differences of individuals. Among the results obtained, the need to constantly pursue new paths of intervention and investigation is highlighted, ensuring that one informs the other, especially in the post-pandemic period and from the perspective of curriculum integration and extension in university education. Additionally, it was identified that there is an opportunity to invest in other formative initiatives and the production of knowledge that strengthens the bonds between youth and between the university and schools, including a redefinition of the university from a youth perspective.
