DESAFIOS À ATUAÇÃO DO SERVIÇO SOCIAL

Abstract

The text addresses the interest in aging in the Brazilian reality, which emerged after participating in a university extension program focused on the elderly. This direct contact led to a deeper study on aging and its relationships with public policies for social protection, recognizing the elderly as rights holders. The author chose as the object of study for their postdoctoral research the social protection system in Brazil, comparing it with the Portuguese welfare state and focusing on the needs of the elderly population. The text reflects on the stigmas and prejudices associated with aging, as well as analyzing the role of Social Work in promoting the rights of the elderly and the challenges faced in this dimension.
