Abstract

Abstract: This study describes public policies on alcohol use and its consequences on public health, focusing on how alcoholics are cared for in SUS. The WHO points out that 3.3 million people die annually from alcohol. It is estimated an expenditure of 7% of the annual GDP with consequences related to alcohol in Brazil. Through analysis of the literature and official documents, the study analyzes the evolution of alcohol policies in Brazil in recent decades and the assistance to alcoholics, which can be divided into two strategies: harm reduction and prohibitionist. Due to the social cost related to alcohol use and its prevalence, the importance of public policies for the care of alcohol users is highlighted, the effects of alcoholism and its consequences, and the sociological bias in control policies for alcohol use. The alcoholic's path in the SUS stands out through shared care in different Psychosocial Care Network services, given the complexity of the biopsychosocial needs and the particularity of their individual needs. The unique therapeutic project, which seeks the psychosocial rehabilitation of the alcoholic, requires interdisciplinary and intersectoral efforts for comprehensive and humanized care, despite recent changes. The results point out the damage and social and economic costs related to alcohol use that can be reduced with policies capable of reducing consumption and strategies that lead to changing harmful behaviors and environments.
