Abstract

This article examines relationships between women, photography, and tproduction of the visible, focusing on the photographic practices of Tina Modotti and Fernanda Magalhães. Starting from the question of who can occupy the position of image-maker, we discuss authorship, framing, conditions of production and circulation. The encounter between these artists is not grounded in historical or aesthetic continuity, but in the possibility of thinking about forms of intervention in ways of looking and creating. In Tina Modotti’s work, we analyze the constitution of a situated photographic gaze and her engagement with image circulation. In Fernanda Magalhães’s work, we address the articulation between photography, the body, and self-representation. We argue that their practices expand the field of the visible while displacing frames and modes of recognition. We propose “politics in/of the image,” understanding the image as a space for social relations and capable of producing shifts in the field of the sensible.
