Abstract

The 1931 First Women's Art Exhibition took place within a context of academic and professional integration, alongside the struggle for women's suffrage. This study seeks to understand the emotions present in five news reports published by the Diário de Notícias (1931). Drawing on the Anthropology of Emotions—specifically the contextualist approach of Foucaultian inspiration proposed by Lila Abu-Lughod  and Catherine Lutz —we investigate the relationship between emotions and artists within journalistic discourse, which shapes the very reality it describes. We conclude that the memory of women artists dialogues with gender issues and that the press played a role in its fabrication: at times celebrating "well-behaved" struggle, and at others stigmatizing "passionate and angry militancy." The use of emotions and discourses—such as the press's reaffirmation of "beauty" versus the artists' defense of "intelligence"—signals new political subjects forging their own memories against a narrative of patriarchal control.
