Abstract

This article analyzes a relief found on Via della Foce in Ostia, made approximately in the second century AD, which likely served as decoration and advertising for a shop. The focal point of this study concerns the representation of the female figure, which deviates from iconographic conventions and Roman literary traditions regarding the female role in society. Thus, this article seeks to elucidate how this occurs and raises hypotheses about the reasons for this visual choice. To this end, methodologically, by placing women at the center of the debate, this study seeks to be grounded in the perspective of women's history. For visual analysis, Brazilian and international scholars and Latin texts will be used.
