Author Guidelines

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

1. Imagem: Revista de História da Arte adopts the American Psychological Association (APA) style as its formatting standard. Please pay close attention to the APA’s author–date citation system when submitting a text.

2. Submitted manuscripts must contain between 4,000 and 10,000 words.

3. Texts may be submitted by holders of a master’s degree, doctoral candidates, or PhDs. Master’s students must submit papers in co-authorship with a PhD.

4. Artists’ texts may be submitted by anyone engaged in artistic practice and must present a thorough reflection on that practice.

5. Full texts may be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, French, English, or Italian.

6. Regardless of the language, the manuscript must also include an abstract and keywords in English.

7. Articles must be submitted in MS Word (.doc) or OpenOffice format.

8. Article titles must appear in both the original language of the text and in English.

9. Manuscripts must include an abstract (150 words) and 3 to 5 keywords in the original language and in English.

10. All author information — including name, ORCID, institutional affiliation (Department, School, and University where the author teaches or is enrolled in graduate studies), and funding information — must be provided at the time of submission through OJS.

11. Direct quotations of more than four lines must be indented 4 cm.

12. Direct quotations must include the page number, while indirect citations do not require it.

13. All bibliographical references must be included at the end of the document under the subtitle “References.”

14. The reference list should only include works that are explicitly cited in the text, and vice versa.

15. Footnotes should be explanatory only and numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals.

16. Terms in languages other than the language of the text must be written in italics.

17. Images and figures must be accompanied by a title, number (e.g., Figure 7), and source (see Template).

18. Do not insert elements such as text boxes or shapes. The document must contain only text and images.

19. The journal accepts for evaluation manuscripts previously deposited in recognized preprint servers, provided this is indicated by the author at the time of submission.

20. Authors must include in the manuscript a statement on the availability of research data, indicating where the data can be accessed or justifying their unavailability.

21. Upon acceptance of the manuscript, authors will be required to specify the individual contributions of each author for inclusion in the final published article, preferably using the CRediT system (Contributor Roles Taxonomy).

22. Authors must formally declare the existence or absence of conflicts of interest.

23. Authors must disclose the use of generative artificial intelligence tools (such as large language models and chatbots) in the preparation of the manuscript, except for straightforward grammar correction, editing, and formatting. Authors bear full responsibility for verifying the accuracy and validity of any AI-generated content. AI tools may not be listed as authors or cited as bibliographic sources.

Author Responsibilities

  • The submission must be original and unpublished, and must not be under review for publication by another journal.
  • The accuracy and authenticity of the submitted manuscript are the sole responsibility of the authors.
  • The opinions expressed in the article do not necessarily reflect the views of the journal or its editorial board.
  • The editorial board and editors of Imagem disclaim all responsibility for inaccuracies and/or omissions contained in the articles.
  • Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission to use materials protected by copyright.
  • Authors must formally declare the existence or absence of conflicts of interest.
  • The use of generative AI tools must be explicitly disclosed in the manuscript, clearly describing which tool was used and to what extent it contributed to the text. It is prohibited to present as one's own authorship content generated entirely by AI. Authors remain fully responsible for the rigor, originality, and integrity of the submitted work.
  • Authors must include in the manuscript a statement on the availability of research data, indicating where the data can be accessed or justifying their unavailability.

Submission Requirements

  • For the submission of open-call articles or Dossiers, a minimum qualification of a master's degree is required. This requirement does not apply to Artists' Texts.
  • The submission file must be in Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.
  • The text must follow the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in the Author Guidelines.
  • The journal accepts for evaluation manuscripts previously deposited in recognized preprint servers, provided this is indicated by the author at the time of submission.
  • By submitting this manuscript, the author agrees to be available as an ad hoc reviewer for this journal on topics related to their area of research.

Authors retain copyright over their article and grant Imagem a non-exclusive license to publish it. Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission to use copyrighted materials. The names and addresses provided to this journal will be used exclusively for the services provided by this publication and will not be made available for any other purpose or to third parties.

Thematic Dossier

For each issue of Imagem: Revista de História da Arte, a dossier may be organized comprising articles related to a predetermined theme, coordinated or not by a responsible researcher. Dossier articles must follow the same guidelines as regular articles. Each dossier must contain a minimum of 3 articles and may include an introductory text following the same guidelines as a regular article.

Articles

– Imagem: Revista de História da Arte receives submission of  articles in continuous flow;

– Articles submitted for publication must be original and unpublished, and their simultaneous presentation in another national journal is not allowed;

- Submitted articles are initially evaluated by the Editors, who analyze their adequacy to submission guidelines, the scope of the journal, and the adopted evaluation criteria. Imagem's editorial team reserves the right to reject papers that do not meet the adopted qualitative standards or comply with the journal's editorial guidelines.

- Articles approved in this first stage are then submitted to ad hoc reviewers (in a double-blind peer review system), who can accept, refuse or suggest changes to the author;

– In the case of articles with multiple authorship, only those who performed all of the following functions may be listed as co-authors: substantial contribution to the conception or elaboration of the paper, writing of the initial draft or content review of the final version and approval of the submitted version. All co-authors assume responsibility for the data and information in the paper. Supervisors, when they do not fulfill the functions outlined above, should not be listed as co-authors;

– Multiple submissions by the same author or the same article will not be sent for evaluation, and the author is responsible for ensuring that there is only one current submission in the system at a time;

– If the reviewer recommends that the article be adequate and resubmitted to the journal, the author must make the necessary adjustments and submit the text again within 3 (three) months from the date of receipt of the decision. Submissions that exceed this period will be canceled;

– The author must wait a period of 1 (one) year, from the date of publication of a paper, to submit a new text. Papers submitted before this period will not be considered for evaluation. This clause is also valid in cases where one of the co-authors has published for less than 1 (one) year in Image;

– Authors who have had their work published in Imagem: Revista de História da Arte are expected to contribute by providing reviews periodically. The journal reserves the right not to forward for evaluation papers by researchers who have repeatedly refused requests for a review.

Artist Texts

This section is dedicated to experimental writing by Brazilian and international artists. Texts must be up to 6,000 words and may be preceded by an introduction of up to 2,000 words. They must have a title, abstract, and keywords in English, followed by the "paper" format.

Publications Reviews

Reviews must cover national and foreign publications launched in the last 24 months. They must have up to 3,200 words, present a brief title and the complete technical file of the reviewed work. Quotations must be accompanied by the respective page number of the base publication reviewed. Except for the above, reviews follow the rules of papers and must present an abstract, keywords and title version in English.

Exhibition Reviews

Exhibition reviews must address national or international exhibitions that took place in the last 24 months. It must have up to 3,000 words, present the title, technical file, location and institution. For virtual exhibition, it must mention address/link, date and time of access. It is essential to quote artworks correctly.

Interviews

Interviews must follow the "question-answer" format and contain a maximum of 7,000 words. They must have a title, abstract, keywords and follow the paper submission rules.

Translations and Documents

Translations will be evaluated according to the importance and relevance of the translated text and must have a maximum of 9,000 words. For the rest, they follow the rules of the papers. They must also be accompanied by authorization from the author and the original text and source. In addition, translations or documents may contain a presentation by the translator or publisher with a maximum of 2,000 words.

Gallery

It is a unique place to explore, relate, comment and explain images presented by the authors. Papers for this section with a maximum of 5,000 words will be accepted. The included images must not exceed 8 (eight) - preferably in color, with a resolution of 300 dpi, saved in jpeg or tiff (vertical image: 24 x 18 cm; horizontal image: 24 x 36 cm).

Authors retain copyright over their article and grant Imagem: Revista de História da Arte a non-exclusive license to publish it.
