Dossier: More Women in Images

Call for Papers – Volume 08 (2026)
Organized by Carolin Overhoff Ferreira and Karina Almeida

In recent years, we have witnessed a growing strengthening of reflections on images produced by women and on the ways in which female bodies, subjectivities, and gazes have been represented—or erased—in the fields of cinema, visual arts, and photography. This dossier aims to gather articles that contribute to the critical debate on the presence—and absence—of women in and behind images, from an intersectional, historical, and political perspective.

The goal is to foster a plural discussion, welcoming research focused on the analysis of works and trajectories of artists, filmmakers, and photographers, as well as reflections on curatorial practices, archiving, and representation policies. We are especially interested in making visible productions from the Global South, counter-hegemonic practices, and feminist and decolonial epistemologies that challenge the male and Eurocentric dominance in the fields of visual arts and audiovisual media.

The dossier “More Women in Images” seeks to compile articles addressing the following thematic areas (among others):

  • Representations of the feminine in cinema, photography, and visual arts;
  • Trajectories of artists and creators marginalized or rendered invisible by the history of art and cinema;
  • Feminist, decolonial, and intersectional epistemologies applied to image analysis;
  • Curatorship, archives, and memory practices focused on women and gender dissidents;
  • Audiovisual and artistic practices as tools for emancipation and social critique;
  • Creative processes of women in contemporary audiovisual and visual arts;
  • Gender and authorship: challenges in criticism, history, and image production.

Submission deadline: September 1, 2026

Unpublished articles in Portuguese, Spanish, French, or English will be accepted. Texts must follow the journal’s editorial guidelines and be submitted through the official journal platform (https://periodicos.unifesp.br/index.php/img/about/submissions). The call is open to researchers of all areas, with particular interest in contributions that value interdisciplinary perspectives and a commitment to gender justice.

Dossier:  Place-World from Africa and Abya Yala. Anthropology and Arts in Forest and Desert Contexts: Traces, Agency, and Dingpolitik

Call for Papers - Volume 09 (2027)

Organized by Carolin Overhoff Ferreira (UNIFESP-BR), Denise Dias Barros (USP-BR), John Fletcher (UFPA-BR), Mahfouz Ag Adnane (UNIFESP-BR)

The dossier "Place-World from Africa and Abya Yala. Anthropology and Arts in Forest and Desert Contexts: Traces, Agency and Dingpolitik" establishes a transdisciplinary articulation in aesthetic and political harmony with the societies of the forests and deserts.

The complex web of relationships involving the Arts and Anthropology can serve as a basis for discussing other perspectives on the arts. Such propositions, situated within the territory of creation and the imagistic adoption of culturally diverse subjects, help to generate another strategy to reflect on and for irregular and intercultural societies (Édouard Glissant; Joan Fontcuberta), in addition to highlighting the importance of both emotion and dreams, as well as the sharing of knowledge and cultural transmission in the writing of our time (Tanella Boni/ Zélia Amador de Deus).

The proposal mobilizes the concepts of place-world (Patrick Chamoiseau), ancestral land (Célia Xakriabá), trace (Walter Benjamin, Ernani Chaves, Marisa Mokarzel), agency (James Clifford, Alfred Gell, Els Lagrou, João de Jesus Paes Loureiro, Agenor Sarraf) and dingpolitik (Bruno Latour) to challenge the "reflexive turn in anthropology" and highlight heterogeneities in spaces of historical silencing. Whether through (auto)ethnography and/or "poetics of excavation," artists and theorists from the forest, from the Abya Yala lands (as proposed by the Kuna), and from African contexts redefine the categories of art and authorship, and treat creativity as a mechanism of resilience and survival in the face of modern entropies.

Contemporary societies are marked by complexities in friction stemming from the project of modernity that emerged from Europe. However, these societies construct deviations, arrangements, and political-poetic fabrications as a response. These are some of the artistic outcroppings, interpretable through anthropological lenses and art studies, which may offer clues that, after all, human creativity is capable of, if not overcoming our ills, at least creating mechanisms to help us navigate and overcome them.

This dossier welcomes contributions that explore experimental and collaborative methodologies, as well as proposals that address gaps and promote interdisciplinary dialogue. It seeks to reaffirm the arts and critical reflection as territories of ethical and political (re)inscription, in constant movement and transformation.

Possible themes:

  • Arts and cosmopolitics in forest and desert contexts, from Indigenous, African, and diasporic perspectives.
  • Place-World and territorialities: lived spatialities, affective cartographies, and poetics of existence.
  • Traces, memory, and post-memory through poetics of excavation, archives, erasures, dictatorships, colonialities, and processes of reinscription of silenced histories.
  • Dingpolitik and Third-Action Agencies of objects, images, artifacts, and materialities as cultural and political mediators in intercultural contexts.
  • Aesthetics and poetics that emerge from ancestral lands or contexts without margins, in different modalities of creative practices.
  • Methodological Dialogues: (auto)ethnography, performance, self-writing, reflexive turn, and methodological experimentations between art and anthropology.
  • Image, storytelling, and imagination as critical methods and devices for creating worlds and reinventing narratives and ways of life.

Submission deadline: April 30, 2027
