Abstract

This article presents a translation of an epigram by Martial (XII, 57) ignored by Brazilian clacissists, published in an edition of the magazine O Pirralho from 1911. In addition to the transcription of the forgotten translation, comments will be made regarding the identity of the translator and his merit will be presented not only through the discussion of his translation procedures but also of the confrontation between the place that the poem occupies in the work of the Latin poet and the type of interlocution that it can have with the other poems that circulated in that magazine.

  • Fábio Paifer Cairolli, Fluminense Federal University

    Professor Adjunto de Língua e Literatura Latina da Universidade Federal Fluminense. Doutor em Letras, concentração em Letras Clássicas, pela Universidade de São Paulo (2014). Possui graduação em Letras (Português/Latim - 2005) e mestrado em Letras (Letras Clássicas - 2009) pela mesma instituição. Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Literaturas Clássicas, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Poética e Retórica Clássicas, poesia epigramática, poesia satírica, tradução e comentário dos poetas Marcial, Catulo, Pérsio, Virgílio e Horácio, leitura e recepção dos clássicos. Atuou como professor substituto na Universidade Federal de Alfenas (2014). Publicou, em 2019, a tradução completa das Sátiras, de Pérsio. Publicou, em parceria com João Angelo Oliva Neto, a tradução do Livro dos Espetáculos, de Marcial (2018). É também autor dos livros de poemas Sátiras (2011) e Amores (2005). A partir de 2019, publicou também traduções da poesia latina em formato de cordel, tendo lançado versões de Virgílio, Horácio e Marcial nesse formato. (Texto informado pelo autor)
