Abstract

This paper presents comments and translations into Brazilian Portuguese of textual materials published in September 1946 in Laiazul, a journal founded in 1945 in Santiago, Chile, by two Brazilian migrants of Syrian Lebanese descent. Following a brief introduction to the journal, the study first offers a translation, from Spanish, of the article “El día de Gibran”, which advocates for the establishment of a “Gibran Day” in Lebanon and foregrounds translation as a means of recognizing the “universality” of his literature”. The paper then presents three version of Khalil Gibran’s parables “The Astronomer” and “The Two Learned Men”: a) the Spanish translations published alongside “El dia de Gibran” in Laiazul; b) the corresponding English source texts; and c) translations into Brazilian Portuguese. All Brazilian Portuguese translations, whether based on the English or Spanish versions, were produced specifically for this study, which seek to assemble, like Laiazul, a multilingual archive of translations.
