RETURN, RUIN, AND REDEMPTION AIMÉ CÉSAIRE AND THE MESSIANIC NOW-TIME

Abstract

This essay proposes a reading of Notebook of a Return to the Native Land (2012 [1939]), by Aimé Césaire, as a poetic elaboration of a disjunctive temporality that challenges the linearity of colonial historicism. By articulating ruin and redemption, the poem establishes a fragmentary and insurgent temporal experience, marked by orality, surrealism, and the affirmation of negritude as a political practice. In dialogue with Walter Benjamin’s philosophy of history, especially his notion of the messianic now-time (Jetztzeit) (1940), as well as with Frantz Fanon’s considerations on colonial alienation (2008 [1952], 1968 [1961]) and Édouard Glissant’s notion of the right to opacity (1990), we argue that Césaire envisions the interruption of the progressive narrative of colonial modernity by invoking the memory of the martyrs as sparks of insurrection. By setting the linear time of official history against flashes of a redemptive historicity, Césaire offers not only a key to interpreting his own time, but also a fundamental critical reflection for our present, in which the continuities of colonial violence reaffirm the urgency of conceiving remembrance as a political exercise.
